To provide evidence-based strategies for ensuring rigor of case studies, the authors examine what rigor types authors report and how they report them by content analyzing all case studies published 1995-2000 in 10 management journals. Comparing practices in articles addressing rigor extensively and less extensively, the authors reveal three strategies for insuring rigor. First, very few case study authors explicitly label the rigor criteria in terms of the concepts commonly used in the positivist tradition (construct, internal, and external validity, as well as reliability). Despite this, papers addressing rigor extensively do report concrete research actions taken to ensure methodological rigor. Second, papers addressing rigor extensively prioritized rigor types: more, and more detailed, strategies were reported for ensuring internal and construct validity than for external validity. Third, emergent strategies used in the field were reported, such as setbacks and serendipities, that necessitated changes to the originally planned research procedures. Authors focus squarely on the concrete research actions taken, carefully relaying them to the reader so that the reader may appreciate the logic and purpose of trade-off decisions in the context of the specific case study.

This article investigates the methodological sophistication of case studies as a tool for generating and testing theory by analyzing case studies published during the period 1995-2000 in 10 influential management journals. We find that case studies emphasized external validity at the expense of the two more fundamental quality measures, internal and construct validity. Comparing case studies published in the three highest-ranking journals with the other seven, we reveal strategies that may be useful for authors wishing to conduct methodologically rigorous case study research.

The lack of consideration of process dimensions of time in business marketing and management literature in general and in B2B case-based research in particular is in sharp contrast to the importance of time in our society. Marketing scholars need a stronger involvement of time to enrich case study research. This paper offers a structure and a set of questions on critical elements of time and presents a review of the debate on and treatment of time in management and (case-based) marketing science. Based on case-based articles in Industrial Marketing Management and the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing (2004-2006), a content analysis of seven process dimensions is presented that reveals a limited presence of time aspects. Our findings indicate that case studies can benefit from an explicit incorporation of time and its different dimensions. While often only steps or stages are described and references to the flow of time are made, richer case studies also include the dimensions of duration, timing, frequency, pace and order. That way business marketing researchers will be able to deepen their case observations thereby increasing their learning.

Writing studies uses the case study at its primary method and methodology. This article offers a theoretical grounding about case study research and especially internet case study research. It argues that boundaries and spheres of influences are crucial to constructing an effective case study. It advocates for avoiding overstatement and overload when constructing internet case studies. It then discusses the ethics of case studies, focusing on searchability. It concludes by discussing the value of case studies in general.

Despite some notable exceptions, the intricacies, dilemmas and impact of manufacturing management researchers' adoption of different field roles during data collection in collaborating organizations tends to be glossed over in published work. The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential impact of different field roles upon manufacturing management research. Through a discussion of the research methodology literature two ideal types are presented: the researcher field role and the consultant field role.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explain the background to the special issue and to provide an introduction to the articles on case studies included in the issue. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses a review of developments in both the qualitative tradition and case studies in management research to provide a backdrop for the articles that are included in the issue. The articles discuss: the merits of unique cases and singular forms of evidence within a single case; the comparability of case studies with tools in other areas; and methods of theorising from case studies. Findings – The merits of case studies have often been understated. The articles in this issue highlight a broader variety of uses of case study research than is commonly recognized. Originality/value – This guest editorial introduces the papers in this issue, which may be read either as individual contributions that have merits per se, or as part of a collection that this introductory paper helps to knit together.

The case-study research method is popular across various disciplines; however, critics of the method argue that results from this form of research are applicable only to the case studied and cannot be generalized further. In the field of construction engineering and management (CEM), the number of papers employing case-study research methods over the past decade has increased substantially. As the method proliferates, the question arises: are CEM case studies being performed with sufficient validity and reliability to meet the burden of proof to generalize from the case-study findings? Meeting the burden of proof is particularly critical in CEM because of the unique, site-based nature of the projects and industry. This paper presents a review of 156 papers employing case studies published in the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, of which the writers identified 33 theory-building case-study-method papers. This subset of theory-building papers was examined to induce a set of requirements and guidelines derived from these case-study research efforts to aid researchers in meeting the burden of proof. The writers anticipate that more methodologically consistent and comprehensive case-study research will yield new lines of inquiry and rich theoretical models that enhance and expand CEM research.

With the advent of the Information Society, organizing and selecting knowledge has become essential to stand out and keep up with social trends and the market's innovation processes. The University, in this context, can be an essential actor from its tripod Teaching, Research, and Extension. In this sense, the motivation of this work is to present a Research Observatory, as an option for university extension, that is, an approach to society and the market. This article explains the concept of the Observatory as a space for diffusion and development, lists the essential premises for the reproduction of the model and presents the case study of the creation of the Research Observatory "Digital Older Person - Confronting ICT Illiteracy" in Brazil. As observed, the advantages of creating a Research Observatory range from the possibility of organizing information focused on the improvement and development of a theme to social transformation through information accessible to companies and individuals. The essential points for the enterprise's success are the unity of the multidisciplinary team, the focus for action, and the constant updating of the base using a planned schedule. Finally, the activity also provides an opportunity for the encounter between the University and society, fostering innovation and transforming reality.
